There is nothing better than being immersed in daily life in order to improve language skills, learn about another culture and gain an otherwise impossible insight into one's own culture and society. Living in a home rather than a residence hall presents unique opportunities as well as challenges. Keep in mind that just like here in the United States, the concept of "family" is very flexible. In fact, most students tend to live in non-traditional households (i.e., mother+father+children) that, nevertheless, offer the same kind of companionship and interest in intercultural exchange.  

For some students, having to live with strangers while not being able to communicate can present a great deal of anxiety. However, if you are patient, flexible and persistent the benefits can be incredible. Again, if you are serious about improving your language skills, nothing beats this experience.

While in Oviedo, students will be assigned homes within a twenty-minute walk of the School of Education (Facultad de las Ciencias de la Educación) on the calle Aniceto Sela (at the corner of Llamaquique) where classes are held. Once you are informed of your homestay address, you can check this interactive map for both streets.

How many students will be assigned to each family?
One.

How many meals are provided? What else is included?
Three meals each day are included (and should be taken, at least during the week) with families in Oviedo.  You will have your own room (with linens, towels, etc.), and families will also take care of your laundry.

Who are the families?
The Office of International Relations of the University of Oviedo maintains a listing of families.  These families are continually screened, evaluated by departing foreign students and ranked.  Homes are added and removed from the list as deemed necessary.

How are students matched with families?
The U. of Oviedo provides a housing form with which students indicate their age along with restrictions and preferences related to food, smoking, pets, children, etc.

What happens if there is an unanticipated problem with a family?
Students are encouraged to try to come to an understanding with their hosts. The ASC resident director is always available for support, but students will be reassigned if the situation cannot be resolved.

Who do we contact if there is a problem?
You will be given the local phone number of the ASC resident director before the end of the Spring semester.
